Nibbling (2023) plays with the possibility of monstrosity available through digital collage. Pictured is a figure made primarily of art historical references ranging from Dürer to Rubens. The creature with three mouths, three noses, and four eyes gnaws at my mannequin's arm. The mannequin, named Ivanka, is my muse in the studio. As in this image, even when she is not the subject of a painting, she gets the ball rolling and is often the first image I place in the composition. The art historical references also put my creation in conversation with the originals. The sources appear simplified due to the thick single layer of oil paint. Yet the work complicates the sources based on how they morph and why they do so. Much like Hannah Höch's collages, the painting innovates by taking images and replacing their original contexts. My process continues to develop her collaging techniques through the use of Photoshop.
